What's happening, in plain languageΤι Συμβαίνει, Απλά
Almost everything Attica's 67 municipalities collect goes to one place: the Fyli landfill in West Attica, the largest of its kind in Europe. It has been running since 2004. European inspectors have raised concerns about it twice, in 2021 and 2023, finding pollutants in the surrounding water above legal limits. In December 2025 the regional waste authority had to approve €11.2 million for an emergency expansion, because otherwise the site would have filled up by summer.

The problem is already on recordΤο πρόβλημα είναι ήδη καταγεγραμμένο
This isn't a prediction. European Parliament inquiries in 2021 and 2023 documented pollution in the water around the site exceeding legal limits.

Local manufacturing jobsΤοπικές θέσεις εργασίας στην παραγωγή
The facility creates permanent, skilled manufacturing roles — not sorting or logistics work. Attica already has the strongest labour market in Greece, with unemployment below the national average. Exact job numbers are confirmed once the facility is sized.

Your region pays a fee, and gets back moreΗ περιοχή σας πληρώνει ένα τέλος και λαμβάνει περισσότερα πίσω
Carbotura builds and pays for the entire facility. The regional authority pays a per-tonne processing fee, and 13 months later starts receiving a larger royalty payment back — growing every year and always exceeding the fee.

How the Circular Royalty™ worksΠώς Λειτουργεί το Κυκλικό Δικαίωμα™
The materials your household puts out are converted into manufactured products and sold. A share of that value comes back to your region as a royalty payment — not a discount, not a rebate, but a direct payment tied to what your materials become.

There is also a second, separate payment: a remediation royalty on the material already buried at Fyli, at €50 per tonne. It stacks on top of the main royalty at no extra cost to your region. How much material that covers is settled before any agreement is signed.

Frequently asked questionsΣυχνές Ερωτήσεις
Do I really just put everything in one bin?Βάζω πραγματικά τα πάντα σε έναν κάδο;
Yes. Everything is sorted inside the facility, not at home. No rinsing, no separating, no checking labels.
Will my neighbourhood smell different?Θα μυρίζει διαφορετικά η γειτονιά μου;
If you live near Fyli, that is the point. The landfill is the smell source today. A manufacturing facility is fully enclosed and airlocked, designed to have almost no smell or discharge, and sending less material to the landfill reduces what comes out of it.
How does this reduce what I pay?Πώς μειώνει αυτό όσα πληρώνω;
The royalty paid to your region helps offset costs that would otherwise only rise. The national landfill tax is already legislated to climb from €35 per tonne in 2025 to €90 by 2035 — that increase happens either way. You also stop paying the sorting and contamination overhead of the current system.
What about electronics and batteries?Τι γίνεται με τις ηλεκτρονικές συσκευές και τις μπαταρίες;
All material types are processable. No separate drop-off trip is required.
Is this just incineration?Είναι απλώς αποτέφρωση;
No. Incineration burns material with oxygen and produces ash and air emissions — the material is destroyed. This process breaks materials apart without burning them, in an oxygen-free chamber, and reforms them into manufactured products: synthetic graphite, graphene compounds, and recovered minerals. Incineration destroys; this manufactures.
What happens to the material already buried at Fyli?Τι γίνεται με τα υλικά που έχουν ήδη ταφεί στη Φυλή;
There is a separate arrangement for it. Material already in the ground can be recovered and processed too, with its own royalty payment back to your region at €50 per tonne. How much is covered is settled before any agreement is signed.
Environmental and performance figures are designed targets at commercial scale — they are not guaranteed operational outcomes. Financial projections — including the €107.00 per tonne royalty estimate for Year 2, against a separate €86.27 per tonne fee, and the €50 per tonne remediation royalty — are modelled estimates based on standard contract parameters converted from US dollars to euro at a spot rate, and are subject to confirmation before any agreement is signed. Job figures are deferred until the facility is sized — they are not estimated here. Attica's current disposal cost (~€51.70 per tonne) is derived from the regional authority's own published 2025 budget divided by verified landfill volume. Regional waste volume is a range across older sources; the lower figure is used. Pollution findings at Fyli are from European Parliament questions in 2021 and 2023, public record.
